Arts in McNairy Holiday Singers Concert

The Arts in McNairy Music Committee has something special planned for this holiday season! The committee has always been known for the highly acclaimed summer concert series which will be in it’s 7th year when it opens next June, but residents will not have to wait that long to enjoy quality music. New committee chair, Pam Stackhouse has organized the first incarnation of a community choral group she has informally dubbed the “AiM Holiday Singers.” The group, which has members from every corner of the county, will allow residents their first opportunity to participate in an AiM sponsored choral event. “I think it’s a major step in the right direction,” commented honorary board member, Dr. Shawn Pitts. “The concert series is great, but the AiM Singers will allow citizens the opportunity to participate in music rather than just being spectators.” And participate they have! Stackhouse and choir directors Gene He’bert, Nancy He’bert and Rebecca Atkins have assembled more than sixty five chorus members including twenty five students and forty adults. The group will perform five seasonal favorites. As if that wasn’t enough, to get audiences in the holiday spirit, a fifty member children’s bell choir will ring out two selections on Krystal Bells and Melissa Smith and family will perform two instrumental selections. Soloist Kristee Smith will also lend her considerable talents to the occasion. There will only be one performance, 7:00 p.m., November 30 at Lakeview Baptist Church. Admission is free, or as Pam expressed it, “This is AiM’s Christmas gift to the community.” Of course, donations are always appreciated and AiM directors will be on hand with membership information. Our deepest gratitude is extended to Lakeview Baptist, the Smith family, Pam, Gene, Nancy, Rebecca, Kristee and all those who have worked to make this a tremendous community event. Don’t miss it!

Show Us the Culture!

The Hockaday Broomcorn Festival is quickly becoming a signature event spotlighting the great cultural heritage of McNairy County, TN. The broom maker, Jack Martin, is just one of many folk and fine artists working in our county and the Broomcorn Festival is one of many great community cultural events. Arts in McNairy's Culture and Heritage Committee has been busy conducting a community cultural assessment and we need your help. We believe, as many do, that our diverse culture is the product of rich artistic, agricultural and economic heritage. In 2007 we will undertake an ambitious program to preserve and promote our cultural heritage here at home but to do so, we will need the support and assistance of every citizen and organization interested in improving the quality of life in McNairy County. If that describes you, tell us what constitutes the best of our shared culture by filling out our new online survey. Doing so will help us build a strong sense of community pride, create positive exposure for our area and make a dramatic impact on the local economy. Make your voice heard, join the discussion today!

2006 Photo Contest Draws
More than 200 Entries

McNairy County resident, Ashley Pennington's beautiful still life (Left) won best in show at the 2006 Arts in McNairy Photo Contest. The contest drew 200+ entries from amateur photographers around the area. That's up about 25% from last years contest. According to contest coordinator, George Souders, the quality of the entries was also noticeably improved. Thanks to George, Mark Boehler, the AiM Visual Arts Committee Members, the Independent Appeal, the Daily Corinthian, the photo center at Selmer Wal-Mart and all the MCHS students and volunteers (especially Jenny Bledsoe) who worked so hard to make the photo contest run so smoothly. And congratulations to all the entrants and winners! Official results will be published soon on this thread.

The Homecoming

Nov. 18-19

Don't miss The Homecoming, Christopher Sergel's delightful adaptation of Earl Hamner, Jr's. beloved book. Hamner's characters were popularized in the 70's television drama as the Waltons, but Sergel's adaptation preserves the original family name Spencer in this heart warming family drama set during the holiday season. The show is suitable for all ages making it the perfect way to kickoff the holidays with the whole family. Only two performances are scheduled: Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2:00 PM. Both shows will be at the McNairy Central High School Little Theatre.
